About This Novel
In 1955, I was 9 years old. Because I was hospitalized for surgery for congenital heart disease, the doctor issued a certificate requiring me to take a one-year leave of absence from school. In March, after the first spring rain, my father stopped a carriage in an alley, went to the Municipal Children's Hospital in Yuetan, and took me back to my home on Dongsi North Street. The fare cost more than one yuan, which made my mother feel distressed. My house seems smaller than before. The windows were polished by my grandma. The blue plaid sheets were so neat that there were no wrinkles. The sun shone in through the glass windows. Everything was new. My father carried me into the house and carefully put me on the bed as if he were putting a fragile object. I sat on the edge of the bed and looked up at my father, mother, and grandma. The same word was written in their eyes: worry.
