This book is Benjamin's doctoral thesis. In view of the misunderstanding of Romantic theory that was popular at the time, Benjamin tried to trace the changes in the concept of art criticism of the German Romantic School using the idea of problem history, with the intention of revealing the philosophical foundation of its art criticism and accurately defining the positive achievements of the German Romantic youth movement. Different from the general research on the history of art criticism, the author prefers to bring it into a broader perspective and conducts an in-depth review of the concept of reflection, epistemology, artworks, and art theory understood by the Romantics. The elucidation of inner criticism and salvationism is extremely insightful.
