About This Novel

It is a true record of our times and a restless and sad multi-voiced narrative about the 20th century. We can read all kinds of descriptions from it: cosmological theories, religious life, love affairs, philosophical opinions, popular songs, story outlines, movie scenes; we can meet all kinds of characters: scientists, philosophers, Holocaust survivors, Nazi officers, cabinet members, theologians, film producers... All of them are just like the metropolitan New York described by the author, eccentric and charming. But the author is by no means just playing a postmodern "puzzle" game: at the end of the turbulent and painful 20th century, Doctorow made a real exploration of human spiritual life and historical destiny by showing the spiritual world of a converted Christian priest and an evolutionary Jewish rabbi.
