About This Novel
Sun Li's creative career lasted for more than sixty years, and was divided into early and late periods with different styles based on the "Cultural Revolution". His early works were clear and soft, using light brushstrokes to outline picturesque local folk customs, and were called "poetic novels". His representative works are "Lotus Lake", "Luhua Dang", "The Story of Ironwood", etc., And there were many imitators. His later works tended to be plain and simple, obviously inheriting the essence of Chinese classics, and contained deep thoughts on culture and life in their plainness. His representative works include "Yunzhai Novel", "The Story of Newspaper", "Dream of Books" and a large number of reading notes. The reason why such a change occurred is that first of all, he experienced a serious illness (neurasthenia) from 1956 to 1966 and the ups and downs of the "Cultural Revolution" for ten years. He claimed that "ten years were spent due to illness, and ten years were lost due to misfortune"; secondly, during these twenty years, he read a large number of ancient classics and was deeply affected.
