About This Novel
"The Spring and Autumn Period of Wu and Yue" is a work about the history of Wu and Yue written by Zhao Ye of the Eastern Han Dynasty. According to historical records, Zhao Ye originally wrote twelve volumes, but the handed down version of "Wu Yue Chun Qiu" has only ten volumes. It is generally believed that the handed down version of "Wu Yue Chun Qiu" is the original work of Zhao Ye of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the finalized version by Huang Fu. The first five volumes of "Wu Yue Chun Qiu" mainly record the rise and fall of the State of Wu, with Wu Zixu assisting King Helu of Wu to take revenge on Chu and King Wu Fu Chai's struggle for hegemony as the main line; the last five volumes mainly record the history of the rise and fall of the State of Yue, with Gou Jian's revenge for destroying Wu as the main line. Compared with the records in historical books such as "Guoyu", "Zuo Zhuan" and "Historical Records", the content of the history of Wu and Yue's struggle for hegemony contained in "Wu Yue Chun Qiu" is more colorful and is regarded as the origin of long historical romance novels. "The Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue" records a large number of wonderful legendary stories, such as Wu Zixu begging for food to repay his kindness, Zhuan Zhu assassinating Wang Liao, general Mo Xie forging a sword, Wu people killing his son and provoking hooks, Yaoli assassinating Qing Ji, Fu Chai's day dream in Gusu, Yu Dayu's heavenly book to control floods, Gou Jian sleeping on firewood and tasting courage, Xi Shi's beauty trap, the old man turning into an ape, Yue women teaching swordsmanship, Chen Yin teaching archery, etc. Most of these stories are vivid and fascinating, and have become the subject matter sources of later literary works. "Wuyue Chunqiu" is of great value in the study of ancient Chinese literature and the history and culture of Wuyue region. So teachable! In the past, I only knew about King Goujian of Yue, but I didn't know that there would be more than 200 years later.
The story of Gou Jian, the king of Yue, lying down on firewood and tasting his gallbladder is known to everyone in the world. This led to the creation of an idiom. I thought that this was the end of the Yue Kingdom, but I didn't expect that through this Wu Yue Spring and Autumn Annals, I could actually let the readers fill in this gap. The Yue Kingdom could still continue like this under the rule of Gou Jian. After eight masters and a reign of 224 years, he can be regarded as a relatively promising person under his rule! Just like Zhen Huan asked in The Legend of Zhen Huan, if the Yue Kingdom destroyed the Wu Kingdom, then who was it that destroyed the Yue Kingdom? It's not easy to start a business, but it's even harder to stay successful...
Very readable. Our hometown is considered the hinterland of the ancient Yue Kingdom, so we especially want to know about the ancient and medieval history of Wu Yue. This book does have the feel of a novelist's words, but it has history and literature, which makes it more comfortable to read. The Yue Kingdom is located in a remote place, on the coast of the East China Sea, and has fewer ruins than the Wu Kingdom. In the future, you can pay more attention to some geographical or historical sites related to the ancient Yue Kingdom in Zhejiang.
