About This Novel

In this work, Tuchman focuses his attention on Western society 25 years before the outbreak of the "World War I", using an artist's approach to reproduce the ideological trends and ideals, sudden changes and disputes at that time: before the "August Cannons" exploded, the British aristocratic world began to collapse, and power shifted to a new class, passionate anarchy. The righteous dreamed of a harmonious world, imperialist sentiments climbed to the New World, the U. S. Navy quietly rose, the Dreyfus incident set off a fierce confrontation within the French, Strauss's music and Nietzsche's thoughts influenced Germany... Under the appearance of prosperity, the old world was already full of troubles. That era did not die of old age or accidents, but exploded in a terminal crisis and became an important page in history. ... (It is) more than confidence, innocence, comfort, stability, security and peace. People who lived in that era also misled us. When they looked back across the chasm of war, the first half of their lives were shrouded in the mist of a beautiful sunset, full of peace and tranquility. And we mistakenly believe that doubt, fear, turmoil, protest, violence and hatred do not exist. --Barbara W. Tuchman
