The Moon Shines Brightly
About This Novel
Lin Shuyue, the "Nightingale" of the CCP's underground party, lurks as a music teacher, weaving red codes between the black and white piano keys with her fingertips; Shen Yanzhi, a double-agent of the military, travels among Japan, the country and the Communist Party, and the heartbeat of the widow is entangled on the pocket watch chain. A variation of "Jasmine" at a Japanese military banquet brought two figures who were destined to be hostile to each other side by side in the heavy rain - he saw through the Morse code in her piano music, and she saw through the Soviet steel seal in the handle of his umbrella. From the feeding of wild cats at St. John's University to the deciphering of secret codes in Chongqing air-raid shelters, from the blood-stained cheongsam of a Jewish tailor to the desperate ballad of a girl in an orphanage, they use love as bait and ideals as blades to dance on the tightrope of intelligence and lies. Until the eve of victory in 1945, a bullet that penetrated a pocket watch caused the unspoken Russian confession to sink forever to the bottom of the Huangpu River. Forty years later, Lin Shuyue sat alone in front of an unknown monument, spelling out her lover's last secret letter in Braille. History carves heroes into monuments, but forgets the survivors in the folds of time - until she discovers that the dried jasmine branch in the gap between the monuments actually hides the truth that spans half a century: some people protect in the name of betrayal, and some use the excuse of forgetfulness to continue the immortal covenant. This is a bloody romance hidden in the grand narrative, and a requiem for millions of nameless people. When the black and white keys of the piano turn into cracks on the tombstone, when the jasmine fragrance seeps into the embers of war, those unspoken loves, hates and unwritten names will eventually find their home in the mountains and rivers.
