Yesterday, I Stood at Dusk with You
About This Novel
In the third year of civilization, gray fog gnaws at the city. The dusk in the deserted city is always stained with blood. The setting sun stretches the shadows of the broken walls and ruins, like a wound that cannot be opened. There are two souls living in Su Yanjin's body. One is "she" who has been tempered into steel in plunder and betrayal. Her wrist is wrapped with an old bandage soaked in disinfectant to cover the ferocious bite marks. Her fingertips are always clasped on the short knife at her waist. She is cold to the bone and firmly believes that "kindness is the most useless sacrifice in the end of the world"; the other is The other is the eighteen-year-old "me", hidden in the depths of my consciousness, always caressing the shiny silver pendant in my pocket (it was a relic left by my mother), wearing a white shirt that has not been stained by gun smoke, and stubbornly chanting "You must maintain gentleness, or your life will not be in vain." They share a body, but tear each other apart every time they make a choice. When she met the child asking for help, "she" dragged her body and turned away, but "I" forced her fingertips to tremble and clenched the child's hand until the palm was pinched with red marks; facing the predator's knife, "she" could stab the fatal blow without changing her expression. When the warm blood spattered on her face, "I" was crying and struggling in my mind, making my vision blurred to the point where I could hardly see the way forward. Dusk is their only moment of respite. The setting sun shines through the gaps in the ruins, and the two souls confront each other in their consciousness. "She" would sneer and pull off the bandage, point to the bite scar and ask "me": "Is this the gentleness you want in exchange for?" But "I" had red eyes and wrapped the silver pendant chain around my fingertips: "You forgot that mother said, no matter how difficult it is, you must leave a little light.
