About This Novel
To this day, I still remember the old Education Bureau under the Jingzhou Tower, the courtyard with red brick bungalows, the thick and big old locust tree in front of the kitchen in the courtyard, the two-story building on the south steps of the courtyard, and Yan Fuzheng, director of the Jingxian Education, Sports and Culture Committee. I remember that day, he left his post, held a farewell meeting with everyone, and walked out of the bungalow conference room at the southmost west side of the building with a water cup in hand. He walked slowly, held his chest high, smiled and talked to people. He walked and stood at the steps of the government building. He looked at the tall, tall and majestic ancient tower next to the courtyard, and sparkling tears rolled out of his eyes. I even remember: When the sun was about to set, there was no one else in the whole building. He walked out of the office and said: Xianhua, I'm leaving and I won't come to work tomorrow. I nodded without saying a word and watched him walk out of the compound, tears welling up in my eyes.
