Back to the Summer of 1968 When the Cicadas Couldn't Stop Chirping
About This Novel
This is a story about longing and regret, a waning old man looking back on his youth spanning half a century. Lin Xiuzhi was lying in the ward, the glimmer of life gradually dimming amidst the beeping sound of the instruments. The enamel jar left by her daughter is like a key to memory, taking her back to the summer of 1968 when the cicadas were chirping. That year, at the age of 18, she carried a canvas bag and came to the distant Xiangyang Brigade. Here, she met the two most important people in her life: the lively and cheerful Ahua, and the gentle and jade-like He Ping. He Ping taught her how to plant rice, weaved straw mats for her, and took her to watch movies in the county town. The youthful youth and tenderness blossomed into the purest flowers in that special era. They sang "Liuyang River" together, took pictures together under the locust tree, and made a promise to go to college and return to Shanghai. However, the gears of fate eventually pushed them in different directions. After returning to the city, Lin Xiuzhi met her husband Wang Jianguo in a textile factory and lived an ordinary and happy life. Time passed, her husband passed away, and her daughter left first, leaving Lin Xiuzhi alone guarding the old house and old photos. On her deathbed, she returned to the summer of 1968, that afternoon when the cicadas were chirping, and the young man under the locust tree was waiting for her, with the sun shining on his face, warm and bright. This is a story about youth and love, friendship and growth, and it is also a microcosm of an era.
