The writing of Chinese literary history in the early 20th century was basically based on traditional empirical and genealogical methods, which is reflected in the writings of some literary historians and researchers from Lin Chuanjia to Qian Jibo. This situation changed greatly after the 1920s. The introduction of Western academic trends changed the research concept of literary history, that is, the study of literary history transitioned from traditional empirical genealogical research to essentialist research. Hu Shi's research on literary history pioneered this aspect and established his essentialist and evolutionary research view on literary history, which had a great influence. It was not until the end of the 20th century that the research concept on literary history underwent a new change. Behind every view of literary history there are cultural trends of thought and political and historical reasons. This book sorts out four literary history models: pure literary history, reflection, spiritual history, and emotion, and then analyzes the cultural trends and political and historical reasons behind them.
