"The Shackles of Life" is Maugham's masterpiece, published in 1915. It is based on the author's real life experiences in his early years and has an obvious autobiographical flavor. After the novel was published, it was highly praised by the American writer Theodore Dreiser and became popular in Britain, the United States and even the world. Maugham himself regarded the book as "an immortal novel".
