About This Novel
"History of European Literature" is a compilation of the lecture notes given by Zhou Zuoren, who was employed as a professor of liberal arts at Peking University in 1917 and taught the "History of European Literature" course in the first-year Chinese Studies course. Narrating the development history of European literature from ancient Greece to the 18th century, it is an important achievement of Zhou Zuoren and his brother Lu Xun's "search for new voices in foreign countries" after they jointly translated "Collection of Foreign Novels". It is also China's first relatively systematic history of European literature. Zhou Zuoren's advocacy of "human literature" and ideological revolution during the May Fourth Movement can all be traced back to this, and he made great contributions to the New Culture Movement.
