About This Novel

The remote and silent village of Akhara, the slow and eternal Kawutu, the summer pasture of Shayi Hengbulak... "The Elf of Altay" Li Juan recorded the beautiful and shining moments of the northern frontier in a panoramic manner with delicate and bright strokes. The whole book is divided into two parts. The first series of memories (2007-2009) records the detailed and persevering life scenes in Kawutu and Akhara villages; the second series of corners (2002-2006) originally describes the daily life of Li Juan, her mother and her elderly grandmother who migrated and moved with the herdsmen: opening a grocery store, working as a tailor, and helping the herders. Folk cars and clothes, going to pick wild fungus deep in the mountains; the bulging tents on the Shayihengbulak grassland in spring, the noisy and grand Aken singing concert on the pasture in summer, the long and solid snow road after winter... Gobi, grassland, forest, snow-capped mountains, horses and herdsmen, the delicate and bright words show the profound and rich living landscape of nomadic people in the border areas.

Willful, bright, calm, joyful

This is an approachable and somewhat casual book. It taught me that the normalcy and brief encounters in life are also worthy of being recorded or celebrated. After reading the entire book, my impression of it seemed to be covered with a light veil, with swirl-like folds in some places, making them stronger and more conspicuous than other places: the grandmother's coquettishness, the mother's flexibility and optimism, the naughty Kazakh boy who loved to pull the author's braids, and the girl Li Juan who sat on the back seat of a motorcycle to feel the wind and sand and finally picked up a few agates. She was riding on the side of the motorcycle to watch a singing concert but was overturned. It turns out that they are innocent, frank and optimistic! Although life is often accompanied by strong winds, cold, heavy rain, and mud, the three generations of their ancestors and grandchildren live a light life, and their lightness reveals a secret and silent tenacity and tenacity. On that stormy night, the grandfather and grandson staggered after the tent roof that was swept away by the wind. It was their home. They struggled to find their only home, which was extremely simple but invulnerable to all poisons. This image made my heart swell and my eyes ache. I vaguely remember what Teacher Li Juan said at the beginning: How I longed to be such a girl. Willful, bright, calm and joyful. ... I hope that I can be such a girl for the rest of my life.

Everything is animistic - About "My Altay"

We can see all kinds of things in Li Juan's writings, such as chickens, cats, dogs, rabbits, locusts, fungus, clouds and even plastic bags. Her observations are very detailed and very keen, but the most prominent thing should be her "thinking", her thinking. She seemed to be thinking about it all the time, such as the abuse of pesticides by humans to kill locusts and the harm they caused to themselves, and the human beings' exhaustion of using fungus to make money and their neglect of the broader things in the forest. Because of this, we can often perceive other things from those trivial daily life, such as the animism of all things, such as the reverence and love for life, such as the insignificance of human beings, and the compassion that never gives up.

The fourteenth book read in 2024

The popular online drama "My Altay" became popular. I watched the drama first before reading the book. Only after reading the book did I know the difference between Batai and Messila, and only then did I know the open ending in the drama. But in fact, Wenxiu and Batai can't be together. I felt a little regretful but felt it was reasonable. I still wanted them to have a good ending in the drama: they got married and bought a house in the city. Batai went to work at his favorite horse farm, Wenxiu wrote at home and worked in a publishing house, and went to Naren Ranch together in the summer... Messila in the book is the character that the author has a crush on. When I saw the description in the book, I remembered those crushes I had in childhood, the people I fell in love with because of my youth, but that doesn't matter...

The extremely clean writing does not require any skills, and the objective statements and eloquent words are enough to touch the soft parts of the soul. It is hard to imagine that these are words about nature and life narrated by a woman in Altay, a place so far away. But if you think about it carefully, perhaps it was a woman from far away from Altay who could write such delicate words about nature and life. At this time, here, in this life, we all live equally and naturally on this planet. Those inaccessible, vast, profound and remote places are recorded, lived, experienced and felt in the most ordinary and simple way. It is beautiful enough to think about it.

We all yearn for the vast world, and we all live in small corners. To love, to live, to be hurt.

Li Juan's writing is always so delicate and gentle. After reading this book, you feel like you have arrived in Altay, a land full of vitality. Being healed by Li Juan's Altay, I hope that one day I can love my hometown so deeply, the land that gave birth to me and raised me, and offer hymns to it. I also like Li Juan's writing style, which is unembellished and diary-style. It's like I'm really seeing the things happening in this land and the living people.

The writing is exquisite and should be included in primary and secondary school textbooks! Should there be essay questions in future high school entrance exams?
