About This Novel
In the late 1970s, three families, namely the Zhuang family, the Lin family, and the Wu family, lived in an alley in the family area of a cotton spinning factory in Suzhou. Changes in the times such as the resumption of the college entrance examination, the return of educated youth to the city, and reform and opening up, have brought about earth-shaking changes in the fate of the parents and children of the three families. A small courtyard, with smoke rising from the kitchen, tells the story of several families and two generations.

I read the novel because I was following the drama. Reading the whole book felt like walking through the trajectory of my life all over again. The characters depicted in the novel are like my former neighbors. Some are like Wu's father, who only cares about the immediate situation and makes his children fall into the quagmire of life; some are like the Wang brothers and sisters, who turned against each other over the house and never interacted with each other until old age. I am glad that my mother is like Huang Ling can transform into an angel for the sake of her children. Although her wings are full of scars, she can show her sharpness at critical points to protect her children. I am grateful to my mother for never giving up no matter how hard it is, allowing me to complete my studies, so that I now have enough food and clothing to live without having to compromise on rice. My father is really like Mr. Jizhuang. Perhaps the adult men of that era were instilled in them from an early age the idea of doing good work for the family. Even if the family could not take the blame, they would still make contributions to the rural family during the holidays. I clearly remember one time when I returned to my hometown during the Chinese New Year, my father gave all the money he had to his uncle. He really didn't even have the travel expenses left. I was really speechless. Every character, every scene, every national and family event in the work seems to have happened just yesterday. Looking back now, even queuing up outside the butcher shop to buy meat makes me feel so real and friendly. In short, this is a good book for me, and it can be said to be a must-read for those born in the 1990s and 2000s to understand their parents' growth experiences.
Great book! Group portraits are much more beautiful than simple male and female protagonists.
The more I read, the more I fall in love with portraiture. It's like digging for gold. It's only after reading so many novels from the old era that I found such a "golden book". Even if it is made into a TV series, it is not an exaggeration. Many period novels like to use time travel and rebirth, and use the halo of the heroine or the halo of the male protagonist as a gimmick to understand the changes of the times and the future development. I really like this novel with a sense of the times. Xiao Ting went from being weak and helpless to arguing with reason and even resorting to devious ways. Li Jia went from blindly following her parents to being measured in advance and retreat, and even putting herself in their shoes and splitting up everyone's family in a reasonable way. These are all reminders for all women. Still remember what Zhuang's mother said to Xiao Ting: What are you trying to do? You can make your own decisions on everything big or small. Women need to be more independent.
It's really good. I understood a lot of details that I couldn't understand in the TV series. Zhuang Tunan is obviously a very important story line, but it is so bloody and inexplicable in the TV series, which is a pity.
