About This Novel

"Gertrude" is one of the "artist novels" written by the German writer and Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse. It creates two characters with completely different personalities: the opera singer Mott and the composer Kuhn with a disabled leg. The individualist Mott must satisfy the blind and manic passion of the audience in exchange for fame and money, but he hates it all, so he is lonely and empty in his heart, and finally commits suicide in despair. Kuhn was young and energetic, and broke his leg while skiing. From then on, he lost the joy of youth. He devoted all his vitality to the perfect pursuit of art and achieved career success, but his emotional cowardice led to lifelong regrets.
