About This Novel
Modern novel. Jin Yizhu. Chongqing Cultural Life Publishing House first edition in September 1942. The whole book is divided into 4 parts. This is a novel of more than 800,000 words. The work is based on a series of major historical events after Japanese imperialism invaded China. It reflects the turbulent social life at that time through the different experiences of more than 20 members of a declining family. The author said in the "Preface": "What I am trying to describe in this long novel is not just trivial family affairs, personal relationships between men and women, and some sadness in a family in a declining big city. I hope that my pen is a magnifying glass, first directly showing those rotten parts, or indirectly highlighting them." The work focuses on the story of the young woman Huang Jingling who finally left her old family and vigorously devoted herself to the anti-Japanese and national salvation movement, and her rapid growth experience. Her father, Huang Lingzhi, was conservative in his thinking, but he maintained national integrity at a critical moment for the survival of the nation. They represent positive forces in real life. The work also depicts many people who have fallen behind the times. The more significant ones are Jingchun, an individualist who is heavily influenced by idealist philosophy, and Jingzhu, a hedonist who plays with the world. Although the work lacks a carefully conceived and refined typical plot, the character description is not profound, and it is relatively loose in expressing the changes and dynamics of various social classes on the eve of the Anti-Japanese War, the work expresses the contradictions and mentality of some old Chinese intellectuals as they embark on a new path.
