About This Novel

This book is an autobiographical novel that tells the life struggle of university professor Zheng Wei. The story begins when he worked as a Chinese teacher in a rural junior high school in northern Henan for 8 years after graduating from the middle school. During this period, he was down-to-earth and worked tirelessly to complete his junior college and undergraduate studies through self-study exams. Then he was admitted to South China Normal University for postgraduate study, completed postdoctoral research at Fudan University, and became a professor at Jinan University. The novel not only depicts Zheng Wei's personal growth, but also presents the landscape, culture and social changes of Henan and Guangdong, delicately revealing the complex relationship between countryside and city, individual and society. Through the struggle of the protagonist, it shows the tremendous changes in Chinese society since the reform and opening up and the positive progress and self-breakthrough of individuals in it.
