Together with another collection of short vernacular novels he compiled, "The Surprise at the Second Moment", they are collectively referred to as "Er Pai". Later generations often refer to it together with "Three Words" ("Yu Shi Ming Yan", "Awakening Words", and "Warning Words") compiled by Feng Menglong. They are both the most famous collection of short vernacular novels in ancient my country. The forty chapters of "The Surprise at the First Moment" show a diverse and colorful society. Here, traditional scholars, dignitaries, and heroes have been relegated to a relatively secondary position, while ordinary people such as businessmen, craftsmen, prostitutes, monks, nuns, squires, subordinates, bandits, and swindlers have occupied the main stage of literature. Driven by various desires, they have performed scenes of surprising tragedies and comedies of life.
