This book is about writing the history of changes, turbulence, collision, development, and mutual shaping of East Asia since the 16th century. Why do we always feel that Japan and South Korea, separated by a water, are familiar but out of reach? The East Asian world we live in and think we are familiar with is actually full of myths and prejudices that need to be rediscovered and re-understood. From a global and continuous perspective, this book explores how the history of the modern world since the 16th century-rather than the individual history of China, Japan, and South Korea-has unfolded on the land of East Asia. The long-dusted past is revived. Through this book, we can discover that the more than seventy years of North-South confrontation on the Korean peninsula and the intricate love and hatred between China, Japan, North Korea and South Korea are actually "legacies" scattered on the road to modernization in East Asia. Although history does not directly provide answers to today, this book helps us to clear away the fog of reality, rebuild common sense, and see the essence through phenomena in the changing situation at home and abroad.
