China and Japan competed in World War I, and the results paved the way for future historical trends; India and Vietnam realized their national destiny through World War I and sought independence after the war; North Korea hoped to become independent with the help of Western countries after the war, but was ultimately disappointed to embark on the process of independence. The five countries with their own characteristics opened their horizons one after another during the First World War and ushered in national awakening during or after the war. I hope that this little book will bring the First World War more fully into Asian history, while also bringing Asians into the international history of the First World War. I also hope that this book will allow the people of Asia to better understand their shared history and lay the foundation for a healthy and peaceful future - a future that can only be shared, not unique to each.
