About This Novel
In the winter of 2004, Zhou Shao, the warehouse manager of Meixian Building Materials Company, returned to his hometown to investigate the death of a department colleague in a car accident. At the same time, his long-time friend and Nanjing warehouse manager Duan Muyun left without saying goodbye. One era has passed and another is coming. This is a novel about the turn of the century, from the summer of 1998 to 2008 on the eve of the Olympics, about the strange life of a warehouse manager, about a lover at the age of twenty who seemed like a train disappearing in a tunnel, until the confusion and suicide in middle age, farewell and reunion, a group of people who want to destroy the past me, and what it means to be me. Five chapters, five different styles: dreams, fables, contemporary reality, novel materials, and literary criticism are stitched together into a complex and powerful narrative, full of internal echoes. Affectionate and violent, realistic and confusing, it leads readers across the 318 National Highway of rhetoric, and reaches the Himalayas at the end of the novel.
