Thomas Jefferson and Pirates: the Rise of American Sea Power
by (u. S.) Brian Jimed Don Yeager
About This Novel
The story begins with an American merchant ship being hijacked by Barbary pirates and the crew being enslaved by the pirates. At that time, the new United States was weak and powerless, and it was powerless to deal with the pirates in North Africa. Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State, had to run around trying his best to meet the pirates' ransom demands. At the same time, he also knew that the pirates were hungry and had to build up the United States' own navy as soon as possible. Jefferson's plan to build a U. S. Navy was supported by Washington and was vigorously pursued after he became president. In 1801, the newly built U. S. Navy immediately went into battle with North African pirates. The battle continued on and off for four years, and the young U. S. Navy successfully completed its mission. In 1805, the United States signed a contract with the chiefs of the Barbary region to resolve their concerns.
