About This Novel

Xu Fancheng is a versatile academic master who understands the three major cultural systems of China, West and India. He followed Lu Xun in his early years and studied in Germany. He studied in India in his middle age and returned to his motherland in his later years. Although he wrote prolifically, as he himself said, the essence of his academic thoughts are concentrated in these essays. This book is his only anthology of essays. Xu Fancheng is a well-read scholar with profound ideological and academic attainments. He engaged in a wide range of topics throughout his life and wrote many translations, leaving behind precious academic wealth; his indifference to fame and fortune, his quiet and transcendent spirit, and his serious, persistent, and perseverant academic style are a model for our later scholars; his legendary life and academic experience in the Chinese translation of "Sanskrit Classics" and the spread of "Huazhang" are also a good story for contemporary Sino-Indian cultural exchanges and the integration of Chinese and Western thoughts. Although he wrote prolifically, as he himself said, the essence of his academic thoughts are concentrated in these essays. This book is his only anthology of essays.
