About This Novel

This book uses the theory of irony to examine Lu Xun's stylistic choices and stylistic effects in the creation process of his novels, and to inquire into the stylistic appeal behind them. It finds that irony in Lu Xun's novels is a speaking strategy, closely related to the ever-changing environment of the times, his nihilistic life experience, and his attitude towards life that resists despair. The despair of human nature and reality did not make him willing to wander and sink into decadence. On the contrary, his rational personality and historical responsibility as an intellectual drove him to choose to resist nothingness to the end: to completely bravely face and ruthlessly dissect the darkness of reality, including his own heart, and eventually become a complete ironist.
