Mr. Xia's Story
by I
About This Novel
The author of "Perfume" Juskind returns to innocence, writes about the sadness of ordinary life and the helplessness of saying goodbye to childhood, subverting the perception of serious literature; it is accompanied by classic illustrations by Sambé, the royal painter of "The New Yorker" and a French national treasure illustrator. "I" is an ordinary little boy who goes to school, climbs trees, rides bicycles, fantasizes about his hazy first love, is afraid of the strict piano teacher, and often feels that he can fly. "My" neighbor Mr. Xia is a "weird", silently leaning on a cane, carrying an empty bag, and running around without any destination. There were only a few contacts between us, but this sensitive, irritable, hurried figure who always seemed to be enduring pain formed a dark background in my childhood. One day, he walked to the center of the lake under the gaze of "I" and said goodbye to the world that had always frightened him, and I also said goodbye to my innocent childhood.
