It is one of the American Film Institute's top 100 thrillers in the past century. The book begins with an encounter on a train: Guy Haynes, a well-known architectural designer, is about to divorce his cheating wife. On his way back home, he meets the playboy Charles Bruno. Bruno was deeply attracted by Guy's talent and temperament, and he invited Guy to his private room for a drink. Bruno, who had been drunk for three rounds, hated his father and was well versed in the murder game, learned that Guy was deeply troubled by his wife, so he proposed a murder plan that he thought was perfect, that is, Bruno helped Guy get rid of his wife, and Guy needed to kill Bruno's father. Guy rejected this plan and made up his mind to stay away from Bruno. However, Bruno, who was unwilling to die, committed suicide without permission and then used various ways to force Guy to do it. The pain tortured Guy, and he finally killed Bruno's father and lived in guilt and fear ever since. Everything seemed to be returning to peace, but Bruno's father's private detective discovered clues. When the truth came to light, Guy and Bruno ushered in the judgment of fate.
