Compared with his fast-hand counterparts who produced in batches and made easy money, Chandler spent more effort and took longer on these works created between 1933 and 1939 and published in popular journals. Therefore, this rigorous and meticulous slow-hand did not make more money from them. Chandler approached these "vulgar and cheap" novels with the mentality of creating serious literature, aiming to find "a technique that can be appreciated by both refined and popular people, which is not only capable of thinking by ordinary people, but also can write the kind of power that only artistic novels can produce."
