About This Novel
The young Paul Boymer, the fitter Garden, Miller who always carried his textbooks with him, the sober-minded Corporal Cropp, the coal digger Haile Weishus, the farmer Detling, and Stanislaus Kaczynski were sent to the front after ten weeks of military training. In 1918, the last member of this class was killed on the front line. The record in the battle report of the army headquarters is only one sentence: There is no war on the Western Front.
