About This Novel

For eleven years, writer Nathan Zuckerman lived alone in the mountains of New England, living an isolated life. In order to treat the sequelae of prostate cancer surgery, he returned to the bustling city when he was over seventy years old. He walks along the streets of New York like a ghost who doesn't seem to exist at all. He re-encounters his idol in his youth, Amy Bellette, late-life lover of the late writer E. I. Ronov. She is old, suffering from brain cancer, and is in a sad state of desolation; he is attracted by a house-swapping advertisement and meets a young couple of writers. The elegant young woman Jamie rekindles his male passion. ; He was entangled by Richard Kliman, a young man who was preparing to write a biography of Lonoff, who revealed to him the secret that Lonoff had hidden his whole life... Aging, degradation, shame, disgust, sexual desire, politics, scandal, literature, rumors, voyeurism, "The Exiting Ghost" has multiple levels of interpretation. Ross's language is as sharp as a thorn, and there is a ironic humor in the coldness, and he has a tough guy temperament. The book's brutal honesty makes it an excellent conclusion to Nathan Zuckerman's series of literary adventures.
