About This Novel

The work is mainly set in the old revolutionary areas of northern Shaanxi from the 1930s to the 1950s. It tells the story of a revolutionary soldier's mother, Liu, an old lady with little feet with deep-rooted feudal ideas, and her family's struggle to survive in a complex and changeable environment. It reflects the friction and collision between different ideas when the old and new societies change, and the long journey of Chinese women from a closed and ignorant state to awakening and liberation since the New Culture Movement. It extols the great changes that reform and opening up have brought to people's lives after the founding of New China.
