Dear Alfonso, we are not here by chance... We are waiting for you. Alfonso, a young officer of the Walloon Guards, went to Madrid to join his army. But he soon discovers that he is trapped in a mysterious roadside inn, staying with all kinds of weirdos: thieves, robbers, nobles, prostitutes and gypsies. He recorded their stories over sixty-six days. Some forty years later, the manuscript was discovered in a locked box. This book about disguise, magic, fantasy, honor and cowardice, obsession and temptation, vividly depicts various characters. The novel uses various genres such as Gothic, picaresque, comedy, adventure, philosophy, and love. The stories are contained within stories, and it is hailed as a masterpiece comparable to "The Decameron" and "One Thousand and One Nights."
