"The Strange Situation I Witnessed for Twenty Years" is a novel with an autobiographical nature. Through nearly 200 short stories about the protagonist's "narrow escape" from his father's funeral to his failure in business, it outlines various strange current situations in late Qing society in the more than 20 years after the Sino-French War to the beginning of the 20th century. The social life it reflects is broader than "The Appearance of Officialdom".
