An attempt to kill Zhang failed in the Shanghai French Concession. Late at night, two black cars, one behind the other, drove quietly towards Zhang Xiaolin's residence at No. 212 Huagegao Road. When the bodyguard guarding the door saw the thin and expressionless face of the familiar young man in the car window, he immediately opened the door. Zhang Xiaolin, one of the three tycoons of Shanghai's "Green Gang", was lying on a cigarette couch and blowing smoke from his hands. Bodyguard Lin Huaibu hurriedly walked up to Zhang Xiaolin's inner house on the third floor and whispered a few words quietly. Zhang Xiaolin said "hmm", stood up slowly, yawned a few times, and walked down the stairs. Several men were waiting in the living room. When they saw Zhang Xiaolin, who was over sixty but still tall and domineering, come in, they all stood up immediately.
