"Typical Yankee" is an American story. The novel tells the painful struggle of three Chinese intellectuals who came to the United States in the 1940s to pursue their own American dreams. When the Zhang family consisting of Ralph Zhang, his sister Teresa, and his wife Helen first settled in the United States, due to the differences between American culture and Chinese culture, the Zhang family was particularly repulsive and had a certain disdain for American culture. However, in the process of pursuing their own "American Dream", the Zhang family faced two different values and cultures, and fell into a series of dilemmas. In the process of self-reflection in loss and despair, they gradually understood the essence of the "typical Yankee" and became the "Yankee" they had previously despised.
