Drum Rhyme
by Li Zhichuan
About This Novel
Probably in 1983, a gong and drum troupe emerged in Hukou County. The gong and drum troupe does nothing else but play and beat to see off the coffin. There are eight people in the gong and drum troupe, four of whom are on the pair of gongs and cymbals, plus small gongs, horse gongs, a drum player and a drum pusher, which is exactly the same as the Eight Immortals table. There are not many people in the team, but the momentum is the greatest. It is the only ringer team in the funeral procession. Going to mourning is also called mourning tour. The streets in Hukou County are three miles long from the west gate to the east gate, and mourners must walk through the streets. After the firecrackers went off and the coffin was raised, the gongs and drums began slowly. The drum beats were neither fast nor slow. The gongs and cymbals were in time and rhythmic, steady and low, all in step with the walking rhythm of the Eight Immortals carrying the coffin. The footsteps of all the mourners were a little heavy and stagnant, and the sad atmosphere of the entire funeral event was suddenly captured.
