An octogenarian old man, an inconspicuous southern island, three important historical nodes, witnessed the "magnificent" transformation of a fisherman's island into a tourist attraction. The novel has a large historical capacity and high artistic fullness. It covers a time span of nearly a century in less than 100,000 words. It is small and large, and there is an embarrassing emotional tension permeating between the lines. From the black land of the Northeast to the ocean, the author Bao Shi's perspective on the South and the ocean is obviously different from that of local writers who were born and raised here. This geographical span and cultural difference just provides the author with a unique narrative perspective.
