About This Novel
In the early 1960s, Liu Dongxia, a peasant woman in the Shayuan area in the eastern part of Guanzhong, Shaanxi Province, was driven by the pressure of poor life and the thought of favoring sons over daughters. She abandoned her seriously ill young daughter Chuncao in a Huangshawowo. Chuncao was picked up and brought home by Song Dacheng, a policeman from the police station who returned from a mission. The novel revolves around Liu Dongxia's thirty-five-year story of losing, missing, finding, and meeting relatives. It creates more than a dozen characters with distinctive personalities and ill-fated lives, and interprets the life conflicts and emotional entanglements between parents, children, brothers, sisters, and non-relative family members in three generations of rural families. The novel condenses the historical changes in China's Shaanxi countryside, depicts the spirit of Shaanxi farmers' hard work and perseverance in the face of difficulties, praises the beauty and kindness of human nature, and reveals that only by choosing great love and tolerance can people achieve contentment and happiness.
