About This Novel
"Etoile" was published in 1968. It was Modiano's debut novel and won the Roger-Nimier Prize and the Fénéon Prize that year. The novel unfolds through the delirium hallucinations of the narrator Raphael Shremilovich. The protagonist transforms into thousands of bizarre and contradictory Jewish identities, but hides the most painful tragedy under humor. So we see many real or fictional characters walking around: Maurice Sachs and Otto Abetz, Lévi-Vendôme and Dr. Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Marcel Proust and the French Gestapo, Captain Dreyfus, Freud, Hitler and his lover Eva... Are like carousels spinning crazily in time and space, and when we close the book, the Place de l'Etoile is engraved in the center of the "City of Pain".
