Ancient Furnace
by Jia Pingwa
About This Novel
"The Ancient Furnace" is Jia Pingwa's longest novel so far, with more than 600,000 words written by more than 300 pens. Jia Pingwa said in the postscript: "I am grateful for the more than 300 signature pens. Their blood was black water, and they died quietly in that big basket." The novel tells the story of an ancient furnace village where porcelain has been fired since ancient times, from the winter of 1965 to the spring of 1967. Gulu Village has clear scenery and prosperous livestock, but it is also very poor and closed. The originally peaceful Gulu Village quickly brewed up a mighty collective movement. The villagers relied on and criticized each other, and resorted to violence because of some petty grudges. In just over a year, the entire village seemed to have become a human Shura field.
