About This Novel

"Lowlands" is the most ambitious novel by American Pulitzer Prize winner and Indian-American writer Juppa Lahiri. The novel spans India and the United States and tells the story of the joys, sorrows and fate of four generations of an Indian family. Next to the lowlands of Kolkata, India, a pair of brothers of similar age but very different personalities played and grew up here. After graduating from college, his elder brother Subash went to the United States to further his studies. His younger brother Udaan devoted himself to the revolution enthusiastically, but was arrested and shot beside the lowland for killing a policeman. After learning about his brother's death, Subash hurried back to India. In order to protect his brother's pregnant wife, Gauri, Subash married her and took her to the United States. However, the ghost of Udaan has always haunted Gao Li. Finally one day, Gao Li left his young daughter and Subash behind and headed to California alone. Many years later, when Gaoli's daughter had grown up, Gaoli suddenly appeared in front of her and Subash, and brought back a secret about Udaan...
