About This Novel

At 11 a. M. On May 20, 2015, three epidemiological investigators arrived on the eighth floor of W Hospital in Gyeonggi-do, Seoul. Wearing double-layered gloves inside and outside, they carefully inspected hospital beds, window frames, and ceilings, not even a single hair, trying to find traces of a new type of virus. At that time, the entire Seoul was still bustling with activity. On the eve of MERS sweeping the city, the city was unprepared. Jin Seok-ju, a dentist who has just recovered from lymphoma, is returning for treatment; Li Yihua, an intern reporter who has just seen his late-stage cancer father in front of the hospital bed for the last time; and Ji Donghua, the library manager who is the family's breadwinner. They pass each other in the same emergency room, but they don't know that they will face the same fate in the future. Some of them had permanently damaged lung function and lost 20 kilograms in just half a month. They lost the job they loved, but no one apologized to her; some lost their beloved father, and then lost relatives who came to see their father for the last time, and were left alone in this world; some were tortured by illness in the isolation ward, but always treated everyone tenderly, and were called "smiling boys." They are not just coded patients, everyone in the disease storm has their own dreams and loves, as well as their own past, present and future.
