Nettle Blossoms
About This Novel
"The Nettles Bloom" is a representative novel by Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinsson. It describes his bitter childhood life in a semi-autobiographical form. Martin was born into a middle-class family in Sweden in the early 20th century. When he was about four years old, his family's business went bankrupt, his father passed away, and his mother abandoned the family. Little Martin was sent to a community auction and given up for adoption to a family willing to receive the minimum compensation from the community. He was moved from farm to farm, always living among strangers. As humble as a nettle, destroyed by wind and rain, it still blooms tenaciously; Martin, who was abused by life, grew up and found hope and comfort in books and nature.
