About This Novel

In 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Elisha Pomarantz, a mathematician and watchmaker, fled into the forest, leaving his beautiful and intelligent wife Stefan behind to face the tremendous changes alone. Perhaps there are no farmers, no witches, and no roast geese. Elisha lives in the forest in a purely spiritual state without any material needs at all; Stefan stays in the small town, accompanied by two old Siamese cats named Chopin and Schopenhauer. They survived the war, Elisha went to Israel, hoping to find peace there, and Stefan went to the Soviet Union. Will they ever get together again?
