About This Novel
Chekhov is a world-class master of short stories in Russia and the last critical realist art master in Russia in the late 19th century. Together with the French writer Maupassant and the American writer O. Henry, he is known as one of the "three major short story writers in the world". This collection contains 4 short stories. They all describe farmers. "Peasants" is the author's true description of the poor and difficult life of the oppressed peasants in the Russian Empire. "In the Canyon" writes about the other side of the countryside, the tragedy of a rich farmer-cum-merchant family. "Gusev" vividly describes the tragic misfortune of peasants being dragged to serve as "strong men".
