Typical Maugham-style writing: first-person narrative and omnipotent perspective; a lot of focus and ink are devoted to the first characters (Jane, Marreli, etc.), But the teasing and irony are directed to the supporting characters (Jane's sister, Marreli's friend). What's interesting is that Maugham regards himself as a writer who can only be popular for three months. Judging from the subject matter, if you read this book alone, his self-evaluation is quite relevant.
