About This Novel
This book is a collection of novellas written by the famous Chongqing writer Zeng Xianguo. It is titled "Huajiezi", a real alley in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. It consists of four novellas, including "Entering the Play", "Bridging", "No Other Quest" and "Minami Azabu's Home". Among them, "Enter the Play" tells the story of Zhang Changshou and his wife adopting dancer Qiu Xiaohui as their goddaughter; "Bridging" tells the story of retired teacher Luo Changgui's constant misunderstandings with his son after losing his wife. After reminiscing about the past, the father and son used family affection to bridge the gap caused by grief; "Nothing But" "He Begged" is about the elderly widowed Li Yushan, who bravely pursues happiness despite his daughter's objections, and begins a twilight love affair with his confidant Yi Hua; "Minami Azabu's Home" tells the story of Ye Ziyun taking her young daughter to work in Tokyo with her husband, and the landlord, Grandma Songhua, helping their family overcome difficulties. These works all focus on the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Although the characters of the protagonists are different, they all reflect the common yearning for a better life by ordinary people amidst the changes of the times.
