About This Novel

This book is a collection of short stories and a collection of Kerouac's series of travel-themed articles. Some of the articles included are unpublished manuscripts and are a retrospective of Kerouac's important journeys for most of his life. He traveled to the United States, Mexico, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom and other places. He went to work on railways, cargo ships, deep mountains, and between cities. He chatted and played with people in New York, visited churches and museums in Paris, and stayed overnight in huts and villages in small towns in Mexico. Under the sky of a past without a beginning and a future without an end, he understood death, experienced the huge emptiness of life, and a world filled with roses of happiness. It vividly shows the life of an independent, educated but penniless prodigal who lives all over the world. The background of this life is always loneliness. Kerouac said that the scope and purpose of this book is only poetry, or, in other words, description of nature.
