About This Novel
"Scenes from the Private and Public Life of Animals" is a compilation of satirical articles, stories and novels published in magazines in installments from 1840 to 1842, with illustrations from 1841 to 1842, and with the subtitle "A Study of Modern Customs", published in two volumes by Hazel Press. The writing of the article was initiated by Pierre-Jules Hesel, who is also one of the main authors, and his pseudonym is P.-J. Starr. Participating in the writing are Honoré Balzac, Charles Nodier, George Sand, Emile de la Bédorier, Gustave Trotz, Jules Janan, Paul de Musset, etc. The illustrator is the famous printmaker Grandville. The book was a huge success after its publication and had been reprinted five times by 1845. This book is translated based on the French J. Hetzel, éditeur's 1842 edition and MM. Marescq et Compagnie's 1852 edition.
