This book consists of nine stories in five volumes. Some use historical events to explain ideals and ambitions, some use ghosts to condemn injustice in the world, some promote Confucianism to punish evil and encourage good, and some explore religious philosophy and the true meaning of life. "Ugetsu Monogatari" combines Japanese folklore and Chinese stories of gods and monsters, with exquisite and catchy writing, twists and turns in the plot, tight structure, distinctive characters and vivid atmosphere. It is a classic masterpiece in the history of Japanese literature. "Spring Rain Monogatari" is a companion piece to "Ugetsu Monogatari".
